GERTRUDE Quintet

CLARISSA DURIZZOTTO - clarinet PAOLO PASCOLO - flutes GABRIELE CANCELLI - trumpet MIRKO CISILINO - trombone, French horn MARTIN O'LOUGHLIN - tuba

GERTRUDE is an acoustic quintet born from a project which proposed to create a bridge between improvise and written music. As an acoustic quintet, the music of Gertrude is characterised by the various evocative timbral combinations that the various instruments can create. Gertrude took form thanks to a union of artistic intentions between some of the most interesting musicians active in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. The idea was to create a musical experience containing more complex elements linked to contemporary music and simpler but equally significant elements with roots in folk music united by means of spontaneous compositions.

Their first album, NUAGEUX, was recorded (at the Dobialab cultural centre), mixed and mastered by Iztok Zupan of the Slovenian label Klopotec which also produced the CD. The tracks alternate between pieces that are the result of spontaneous composition and pieces written and arranged by some of the group’s members. In a live performance the acoustic dimension of the group, with subtle timbral superpositions and natural unfiltered sound, provides a direct and participatory experience for the audience all of which makes GERTRUDE ideal for site-specific concerts and performance in natural locations.

Discography: Nuageux, 2024. Recorded and mastered by Iztok Zupan, and produced by Klopotec.
